WASHINGTON D.C.

The highlight of the year will be our class trip to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.  This page contains our itinerary and links to websites pertaining to the many places we will visit. Check out our destinations ahead of time!

D.C. Tours - A virtual tour of the city with historical information. A great place to start!

The U.S. Capitol - This site, developed by the office of the Architect of the U.S. capitol, is an excellent introduction to the seat of our national legislature. The site includes information about history, art and architecture, and interesting facts about the Capitol, as well as providing a virtual tour.

The United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives - the home sites of each of the two houses of Congress, with excellent information and overviews of the legislative branch

The White House - Questions about something executive? This is the spot to find the answer. The site contains info about the President and Vice-president, history of the White House, a citizen's handbook, and the White House for kids.

The Supreme Court - Although we will not visit the Court, we will pass it during our travels in the capital. This site from the Washington Post gives an update on current court decisions and proceedings.

Washington, D.C. Memorials - from the National Park Service - Check these out!

The Lincoln Memorial

The Jefferson Memorial

The Washington Monument

The FDR Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Korean War Veterans Memorial

The World War II Memorial

The National Archives and Records Administration - Visit the on-line exhibit hall, with the Charters of Freedom, American Originals, Propaganda Posters, and more!

Ford's Theatre - Great NPS website concerning the location of Lincoln's Assassination - we possibly will be able to visit the theater if we have time.

The Smithsonian Institute Home Page - Visit the various Smithsonian museums ahead of time at this site. The American History Museum (a Taft favorite), Natural History Museum, Air and Space Museum, and various art galleries are among the many locations to browse.

Gettysburg National Military Park - Visit the park on the web! This site includes an overview of the Museum Collection, A Gettysburg N.M.P. Kidz Page, images, a research page, and more!

Arlington National Cemetery - This site is part of the Military District of Washington web. The site offers excellent information about the national cemetery, including the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, facts about the cemetery, and a background of the 3rd Guard.  You can also check out the official site of the Arlington National Cemetery for great photos.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum - The official site of the Memorial Museum.

Mount Vernon - The online home of the first President - yes, I mean George Washington.

OTHER LOCATIONS OF INTEREST

Twilight Tattoo -  It's some chest-thumping patriotic music and marching! Unfortunately, we have to miss it this year - the river cruise awaits!

Pamplin Park Historical Park and National Museum of the Civil War Soldier - A new stop on our tour this year - and one that I am sure everyone will love!  Get ready to march!

The National Constitution Center - This new interactive museum is devoted to the supreme law of the land, the U.S. Constitution.  Wait until you stand next to the Framer that you portrayed in class!

Independence National Park - Home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (and seen in National Treasure).

Colonial Williamsburg - A former stop on the USM trip.  We used to spend an afternoon in this historic city.

Colonial National Historical Park and Jamestown Settlement -  We used to visit the original location of the first English settlement in America at the Colonial National Historical Park, and then journey to the Settlement center where history comes alive.

Harper's Ferry National Park - A historic location, especially for the the raid of John Brown before the Civil War.  A new stop on our trip - it's pretty cool!

The International Spy Museum - A former destination to our trip - and one with a very awesome website.  Try to crack a code or find a "mole"!
