New Perspectives on THE WEST - An outstanding companion site to Ken Burns' PBS documentary, The West covers a variety of topics related to our first essential question of this unit. Full of images, primary and secondary sources, and maps, this site is an incredible supplement to Unit 7.

WestWeb - WestWeb is a topically organized website about the study of the American West created and maintained by Catherine Lavender of City University of New York. With well-organized topics and a helpful index, the site is very valuable if you want to learn about the "Wild West".

The Wild West - A neat site devoted to the individuals and places of Western lore, with the categories of The Outlaws, The Lawmen, The Women, and The Towns.

Puck's Homepage - Dan Backer of the University of Virginia has created an excellent site centered on the editorial cartoons of Puck, an influential magazine of the late 1800s.

The Gilded Page - A collection of literary and political works from all the big names of the Gilded Age - Alger, Twain, O Henry, Alcott, James, Verne - tough on your printer, but quite a collection!

Ellis Island - The official page of the historical site in New York, with an on-line museum and a hall of fame. A great place to start when looking at the immigration of this time period.

Immigration: 1900-1920 - photographs documenting the immigration process taken by publishers of stereoscopic photographs.

Port of Entry - A pretty neat activity in which you play the role of a historical detective, using primary sources to solve a "mystery" about immigration. A clever idea produced by the Library of Congress.
