In Unit 5, we will see the United States transform in a variety of ways. We will see the expansion of settlement in the "Wild West" as millions move for mining, cattle, and farming. We will witness the disintegration of the Native American culture in the West and the "end of the frontier." Our attention will then move to the cities of the North and East as we discuss the development of industry in the U.S., with mass production and urbanization. People will become more actively involved in politics through new parties and labor unions. The makeup of the country will change as immigration booms on both coasts, especially in the cities of the Northeast.  We will also be analyzing how the major changes at the turn of the 19th century are related to our society at the beginning of the 21st century.
