We will examine the historical West for the two weeks, and our third essential question should be in the forefront of our discussions in class and your studies out of class. What is the legacy of the West? That’s exactly what the National Museum of the American West wants to know, and you have been asked to help. You (and a partner if you choose) have been hired to sketch and annotate a mural that will be displayed in the entrance of the museum. The mural should help tell the story of the importance of the people, places, events, and ideas that happened in the West during the late 1800s. In designing this mural, you should have a creative title and include 8-10 aspects of the historical West and annotate a description of the importance or impact of each. Your images should flow together (like a typical mural). You do not need to be incredibly detailed with the artwork, but be neat and complete. In order to brainstorm for ideas for your mural, consult Chapter 19, ABC-CLIO, your notes, and any other Western history resource for inspiration!
