November 1st through January 5th

All problems are due on January 5th.  In order to earn credit for any of the problems, you will need to show work.  Check this page throughout the quarter, as new problems will be added periodically.

Problem #1:  Logic Puzzle

Four University School of Milwaukee middle school students (Mary, Robert, Sarah, and Tommy) hurried in a panic to the lost and found telephone booth on a rainy Monday in November.  Each student had just discovered that he or she was missing an important item (backpack, glasses, notebook, or calculator) that had been left behind a week or so before.  Can you discover each student’s full name (last names are Huang, Ianos, Jackson, and Lal), the lost item each was hoping to find, and the place where the item had been left (computer room, gym, library, or study hall room)?

1.      Robert first noticed his reading glasses were missing when he sat down to study for a science test.

2.    Lal’s lost calculator  wasn’t left in the study hall room.

3.    One of the students left a backpack containing textbooks in the gym.

4.    Huang’s missing item was left in the library.

5.    Ianos had misplaced a notebook containing data for a research project.

6.    Tommy’s lost object wasn’t left in the computer lab or the study hall room.

7.    Mary didn’t leave anything in the computer lab.

PROBLEM #2 : MARATHON

Six runners wearing numbers from 1 to 6 took part in a race.  The runners wearing even numbers finished in odd-numbered places.  The runners wearing multiples of 3 finished in places that are not multiples of 3.  Lastly, the runners wearing numbers greater than 3 took the first three places.

What was the order of the runners on the finish line?

PROBLEM #3: REVERSE SUMS

The sum 9 + 9 = 18 gives the reverse answer when the numbers are multiplied: 9 x 9 = 81.

Find two more reversals, beginning with 24 + ……………and 47 +…………………..
