Dear Homeroom,

I am thrilled that I am your homeroom teacher and I am anxious to learn more about you!  I will be asking each of you to write an introductory letter about yourself and I thought that you would like to hear about me, too.

Although this is my fourth year teaching full time at USM, I am no stranger to this campus.  For the past eleven summers I’ve worked with Mrs. Bloch in the summer program, both assisting in the office, as well as teaching several classes (some of you might even have had me as a teacher before).  I graduated UW-Madison in the spring of 2001 with a major in elementary education grades 1-9 and a minor in English.  From there I went on to work in Elm Grove teaching 8th grade English four years ago.  I am thrilled to be here at USM and teaching social studies.  I have always had a passion for learning about world cultures, and hope that you will enjoy this subject matter as well.

Growing up as a student at University School has made me appreciate what it is like to go here.  I attended USM from 2nd grade through high school.  During my years here I participated in several extracurricular activities including student council, football, baseball, theater, and current events club.  I enjoyed all of these very much and appreciated the wide variety of choices we have here at school.  In addition, I found the classes at USM to be very challenging and rewarding and the teachers here to be outstanding.  That is probably one of the many reasons why I am so excited to be back here as a member of the Middle School faculty.

Aside from teaching I have many hobbies and interests outside of school.  I enjoy playing golf, watching football, baseball, movies and live music.  Moreover, I also am an avid reader and writer, and enjoy doing both as much as possible.  While I am a teacher for you all, I am also going back to school as a student this fall at Cardinal Stritch University to earn my Master’s degree.  Getting a Master’s degree is hard work, but it is very interesting at the same time.  This is also a very thrilling year for me, as I will be getting married to my fiancée, Jeni Nelson, on May 27th of next year.  I am very excited to get married!

I hope this letter gave you a bit of an insight as to who this, “Mr. Piper guy” is.  My passion for teaching, diverse interests, and eclectic hobbies help make me the person I am.

                                                                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                                                        Mr. Piper
